It’s here: Delusional, the debut EP from Portland’s FENRA, landed this past weekend on 6x Records. Behind the alias is B Laws, a Santa Rosa native who spent years hauling amps across the US, Europe, and Asia before going fully electronic. The early releases – ‘COFFEE’ and ‘DEEPCUT’ – scored nods from Magnetic and CLASH, and mastering came courtesy of Aneek Thapar, fresh off work with Max Cooper and Rival Consoles. If you live for that brain-tickling overlap of Four Tet, Floating Points, Bonobo, and the odd Philip Glass chord change, this one’s meant to enter your orbit.
The EP shifts gears smoothly. ‘DEEPCUT’ locks into a nervous, slow-build house groove, ‘COFFEE’ floats on hammered dulcimer and soft haze, and ‘CHICAGO’ – the clear standout – rides a skittering footwork skeleton under glowing pads, ASMR scraps, and soaring vocal chops. ‘FREE’ sends everything off on an upbeat, almost weightless high: tight four-track statement, zero filler.
FENRA revealed: “I knew from the beginning that I wanted to explore dance music in my own way, weaving in found sounds, ASMR textures, and strings. I started each song from that place, building an atmosphere and mood with a palette of sounds collected from everyday life. From there, I went into the studio with drum machines and synths, and the songs grew more dramatic than I first expected.”
