Dutch composer and producer Sofia Dragt unveiled Roseval on 23 October via SYD Records, signalling a distinct shift in her artistic trajectory. The album fuses neo-classical composition with singer-songwriter clarity and a spirit of experimentation, drawing creative spark from the unexpected.
Described by Dragt as a collaboration between her adult self and her inner child, Roseval leans into tastefully thought out whimsical listening experience. At the heart of Roseval is Dragt’s Schimmel piano, encircled by ethereal vocals, gentle strings, and lush soundscapes. While rooted in neo-classical tradition, the album keeps her singer-songwriter spirit alive with luminous melodies, inviting arrangements, and the touch of a seasoned songwriter. The track that stands out is ‘Ozette‘, The melodic journey can be described as an ethereal restart on modern romantic compositions where the intensity lies within the subtle keys of the piano chords and gentle burst of vocal hums.
Roseval takes its name from a French potato variety with distinctive red skin. Each track extends this concept, named after a different potato, each embodying its own character and mood. This unlikely link between piano and potato underscores the album’s commitment to drawing inspiration from the unexpected.
Roseval is now streaming on all major platforms, with a limited-edition vinyl release on the horizon.
