Ubisoft’s Far Cry® 6 Complete Music – Pedro Bromfman’s thoughts on soundtrack

Hans Zimmer, Ólafur Arnalds, Sigur Rós and Mogwai.

Renowned producer and composer Pedro Bromfman is the mastermind behind the score for Ubisoft’s Far Cry® 6 Complete Music (Original Game Soundtrack.) The complete soundtrack was recently released and consists of 49 tracks spanning over 120 minutes.

The game is set in fictional Yara, where players present as military dropout Dani Rojas and join the revolution against the oppressive rule of dictator Antón Castillo and his son Diego brought to life by Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian, Breaking Bad) and Anthony Gonzalez (Coco). Along the  way, they meet a colourful cast of characters including Clara Garcia, the leader of revolutionary group Libertad, or Juan Cortez, a jaded ex-KGB spy

Bromfman is an award-winning composer with a slew of film scores under his belt. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, he has been writing, playing and producing ‘Music For Images’ for nearly twenty years.

He walks us through a few of the tracks, giving some insight into their making, and how he created the music to inspire players to fight injustice as revolutionaries in the fictional world of Yara.

The defining track for the game’s “emancipation” scenes, is the compellingly dynamic ‘Libertad.’ Bromfman explains: ‘Libertad’ came about as a theme for Yara’s revolution. We needed a powerful melody, full of beauty and longing like the island itself, that could also encompass the grit, darkness and pain of a bloody war. With heavy percussion and electric guitar “Libertad” quickly builds and explodes into an anthem for Yara’s, young and old, fighting for their freedom.”

The hauntingly beautiful ‘Viva Clara’ is centred around the game protagonist Clara, and is a stripped-back, uncluttered composition. “This is one of the three main themes I composed for Far Cry 6. It is probably my personal favorite. ‘Viva Clara’ is an acoustic guitar piece written for a key character in Yara’s revolution. Like Clara, the piece is full of yearning and sadness but manages to look to the future with hope and courage.”

‘The Lucky One’ ties three themes together in one epic track. Bromfan explains:

“This piece scores a key moment in our story. It’s the only time we hear the three main themes from Far Cry 6 combined in one piece of music. We start with Anton’s theme, the iconic cello melody played in the low register of the instrument. As we navigate through the cinematic we hear the revolution theme, ‘Libertad’, and conclude with Clara’s theme, my personal favorite, played on acoustic guitar. Clara’s theme is full of yearning and sadness but it manages to look to the future with courage and above all, hope.”

The bass-heavy ‘Re-Education’ is an auditory journey through central Yara, and although the track only spans a minute and a half, it still packs a punch.

Re-education’ – is a combination of two pieces from the Central region of Yara. The urban area where Anton lives and the military rules. We chose to infuse its music with hip hop and urban elements, like the syncopated hi-hats and thumping bass present here. It’s a distinctive sound within our world.”

The album closes with ‘We Are Lions’ – a commanding track created to accompany Anton’s imposing army. Dark and brooding, this composition is perfectly suited to the authoritarian atmosphere.

“‘We Are Lions’ is an action piece rooted in a theme I composed for Anton’s oppression over Yarans. Its driving ostinato parallels Anton’s army marching towards civilians, the metallic sounds remit us to the sound of clashing swords and the atmospheric processed elements place us in the Eastern region of Yara, where this particular battle takes place.”
