Experimental artist and producer Kayla Painter presents Somewhen, a self-released EP out now.

This new EP explores lost and vibrant future landscapes, and Kayla’s personal relationships with her Fijian-British heritage. Drenched with synths, rich sounds and bright colours, the EP and accompanying visuals envisage a lost future that brings two cultures together. Somewhen is looking into the past to create a new future with a dream like familiarity.

Kayla elaborates: “‘Somewhen’ was always a word used in my family. It describes a time that hasn’t yet happened but only seemed to exist when being with them – an alternative timeline that we were experiencing, hidden from the world that everyone else lives in.

Whilst creating Somewhen, I was really challenging myself to further combine my sonic worlds, bridging the gap between my beat driven ideas as well as ambient. I’ve always been told they are very separate worlds, however they’ve always been two sides of the same coin for me. I wanted this EP to really invite people into my world of sound without being restricted.”

Although the past year-and-a-bit has presented more than its share of challenges, Kayla Painter has notched up some impressive milestones lately, following the release of two AA-side singles in 2020 which gained widespread support including the likes of Gilles Peterson, Nemone, Tom Ravenscroft (who featured Kayla as a BBC 6Music Recommends Spotlight Artist), Jamz Supernova, BBC Introducing on Radio 1, and beyond.

Kayla will be joining Rival Consoles (Erased Tapes) on his Articulation tour as main support in October 2021. This new live show will draw from the visual themes and aesthetics of the EP, exploring an alternative future using bold neon colours and uncanny, dreamlike sequences.

Her monthly radio show ‘Connections to Sound’ on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM continues to present thought provoking alternative electronic, ambient and experimental music. Gathering momentum and fans, her show has welcomed special guests such as Haiku Salut, Hannah Peel and Lake Turner.

Kayla has also been commissioned to make several mixes including for Crack magazine, as well as for Max Cooper’s Mesh label mix series; while her mix for Jamz Supernova’s Selector Radio show was picked up and publicised via Primavera Sound.

She has also recently spoken at the WITCiH online conference, alongside Laurie Anderson, Hannah Peel and Bishi; as well as having an exclusive track on the Everything is Music digital museum platform across Bristol & Bath (Crack Magazine).
