Interview with music producer Henry Green

Henry Green is an experimental electronic musician hailing from Bristol, England. To date he has released two EPs; Slow in 2015, and Real in 2017, as well as numerous singles, namely ‘Stay Here’ released in 2017 via Akira Records.

Blending together genres such as ambient, electronica, folk and minimalism, Henry Green has ambitiously created his own distinct style and palette of tones; from colourful melancholia, to texture-driven ambience, Green continues to mould the shape of electronic music in his own thought-provoking manner.

We spoke with Henry Green on studio experiments and setting the right mood:

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?

Ambient, electronic soundscapes laced with acoustic instrumentation and hushed vocals.

What are the 5 albums that have influenced you the most?

Parachutes – Coldplay
Total Life Forever – Foals
Bon Iver – Bon Iver

And more recently..
Loon – Nils Frahm & Olafur Arnalds
New Energy – Four Tet

What techniques do you experiment with to form your sound?

A lot of the songs are built around loops, sequences or a fixed part. I like the idea of a cemented element that other sounds can weave around and interact with. I love the collision of natural, acoustic instrumentation with obscure, unidentifiable electronics so whatever element I add to a track will always be counteracted or complimented by something completely opposing.

Are there any key pieces of equipment that you can’t live without?

My Korg Minilogue. I got it last year and it has probably featured in every track I’ve made since. It’s a very versatile synth and really easy to get lost in. I’m really enjoying using the Critter and Guitari Organelle too!

What are some of your key influences in your music? Whether it be the sound created by others, imagery, films or any kind of art form.

I’m a big lover of film, and their scores. I think it’s the simplest, most effective example of enhancing or complementing a mood or event with sound. I’m trying to stimulate or enhance emotion with my music so to see sound have that effect in film, helps me understand how I can create mood and atmosphere through my own creations.

What has been a memorable highlight in your career so far?

I think the trips out to Berlin this year to work on the album have been a highlight. Working in a different environment, around different people, has definitely stretched my ideas and opened up new paths to explore musically.

If you could work with, or perform alongside any artist of your choice, who would it be?

There are a few. Jon Hopkins, Justin Vernon, Bonobo, Nils Frahm.

If you weren’t a musician what would you be?

I really don’t know what else I can do. Maybe a Barista. I like making coffee.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

There’s an album on the way and shows to support the release of it. Hopefully lots of collaborations and new music after that!
