Dublin-based five-piece band TOYGIRL delivers a soulful alt-pop cut through with deep R&B-infused grooves. They experimented with a variety of sounds and shared musical interests in pursuit of honing a truly unique style. They enlisted the help of their good friend Aran as the band became more serious.
Their sophomore single ‘Moonlight Velvet’ drops Friday the 6th March, with an MCD headline in the Sound House on the same date to celebrate its release.
See our exclusive interview with them below:
Describe your sound for us. What do you want people to feel when they hear your music?
Ambient, Nostalgic, Authentic. Whatever the music makes them feel, we want the music to be personal but also relatable to a wide audience. We hope that everyone has a unique reaction to our music upon listening.
Which 3 artists have influenced you the most growing up?
Alice Phoebe Lou, Ben Howard, King Krule
How did you discover your particular sound?
Just by smashing our five seemingly unrelated musical preferences and backgrounds together and trying to create something new.
What are the most important pieces of equipment to you?
Synth or guitar. Most of the songs start from a basic chord progression or melody on either of these instruments and develop from there.
What outside of music inspires you to create?
Just the environment around us I guess? Society, culture, politics, gender roles, things like that.
Do you have a favourite memory of your career so far that you will take with you forever?
This year we got to support our hero Alice Phoebe Lou on the Dublin date of her world tour. It was a surreal experience, and one we are sure never to forget.
If you could work with, or perform alongside any artist living or passed, who would it be?
Honestly, Alice. And we were lucky enough to have that opportunity, so we are very grateful.
Most artists say that if they weren’t artists they would be mailmen/women… what would you be?
Cian: Psychotherapist perhaps? Speaking on behalf of some of my other members, Fiachra – an Architect maybe? Aran – something in botany. Ciaran – Chef perhaps? Hannah – Something artistic, painter / graphic designer.
What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
Our sophomore single ‘Moonlight Velvet’ drops Friday, March 6th which we’re very excited about. Other than that, not much is set in stone. We are hoping to play as many UK and Irish festivals this summer as possible, having already been named on the line-up for Indiependence and K-Fest. We just want to play shows and write interesting music.
