Interview with musician Tamrias

Tamrias is a classically trained electro-acoustic musician and producer currently based in Cape Town, South Africa. She has just premiered here debut single, ‘Swell’ and will be releasing her album on Thursday 18 January via Moonswing Netlabel. Titled New Leaf, the album is a deep, reflective expedition into the unknown; swirling, cinematic sound-design techniques, and cut-up glitch-esque electronics swim amidst colourful composition, sampled loops and naturally occurring soundscapes.

We caught up with her on the new album and pursuing dream collaborations.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
I make electro-acoustic music that is an eclectic mix of cinematic soundscapes, beats and enigmatic melodies.

What techniques do you experiment with to form your sound?
I love to manipulate samples: to see how much I can alter a sound from the original, and then build up an entire song around that one sound.

Are there any key pieces of equipment that you can’t live without?
Ableton software. I like to incorporate as many instruments as possible in my writing process, and by routing it through this amazing program I can maximise my creative opportunities.
What are the 5 albums that have influenced you the most?
Seekae – The Sound of Trees Falling on People
Lu_shush – In Person
Lorn – The Maze To Nowhere
Oliver Tank – Slow Motion Music
Slow Magic – Triangle

What are some of your key influences in your music? Whether it be the sound created by others, imagery, films or any kind of art form.

Listening to music is a huge help with my anxiety. I’m strongly impacted by emotional responses to art; I try to create these responses in others, and hopefully help them in similar ways. Nature is also a powerful influence on my sound design.

Jean Michel Jarre said “Music is the human treatment of sounds.” How do you interpret this?
Music can be any sound that invokes an emotional response in a listener. Nature makes music, and so can machines. Music is often sound that’s been organised, but it doesn’t have to be.

What has been a memorable highlight in your career so far?
My first live performance was a huge inspiration for me.

If you could work with, or perform alongside any artist of your choice, who would it be?
I would definitely choose to collaborate with BINKBEATS.

If you weren’t a musician what would you be?
I am working towards becoming a music software developer, and I think I would still have done this if I had not pursued composition.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
I am releasing an album titled New Leaf through Moonswing Netlabel on Thursday (18 Jan), and this year I am working on two EPs for collaborative projects.
