Interview with music producer Jamie Rodigan aka CRT CLSSX

We caught up with Jamie Rodigan aka CRT CLSSX who told us about his musical influences and his plans for the near future.

The son of the legendary radio broadcaster Sir David “Ram Jam” Rodigan, Jamie has developed a love for reggae music through his trips to Jamaica in his youth with his father. His eclectic DJ sets today reflect these musical experiences growing up. Jamie was also exposed to a wide range of music from Rare Groove and House to Jungle and Garage.

He started playing music at house parties during his University days where he formed the sound Extra Stout. This year is a promising one for CRT CLSSX who promises bigger things with a new residency (Dancehall Dynamite) at The Coronet and a busy festival tour planned in the summer.

Hi Jamie, how are you and what are you up to today?
Busy in the studio finishing tracks for my debut release with Aaron Horn.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
Unapologetic Dancehall

Reasonable Doubt – Jay Z
Da Real Thing – Sizzla
New Forms – Roni Size
Only Built For Cuban Links – Raekwon

Which other artists are you into at the moment and why?
Really liking the new wave of Reggae and Dancehall acts at the moment. Artists like Dexta Daps, Dre Island, Chronixx and Vershon really doing some great things for the music.

Are there any key pieces of equipment that you are using to define your sound?
I would say live instruments because they deliver that authentic vibe.

Where do you gather songwriting inspiration?
Everyday experiences. Life itself. We draw inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. What we hear in the streets, life experiences and such.

What’s the best gig you have ever done and why?
Reggae Geel in Belgium last year. 15,000 people in a tent going crazy to Reggae and Dancehall.

And the worst?
No bad ones yet. Always a vibe to share music.

If you weren’t a musician what would you be?
Probably a racing car driver. I like to drive fast.

Do you have any particular gigs or festivals that you dream about playing?
Probably Glasto because it is such a historical festival.
If you could perform alongside any other band or artist, who would it be?
Sly & Robbie

Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

I’m going to be performing at Rototom Reggae Sunsplash which is the biggest European Reggae festival. It’s a great honour to get the call up. Also going to be at various gigs in UK and Europe throughout summer.
