Interview with authentic electronic music producer Runrummer

Releasing her new EP Outer Space, Runrummer continues to leave one intrigued by her ability to switch between the electronic genre vine with each new song. The track ‘Sunny Day’ premiered on the blog Chill Music, and is layered with a downtempo flair. ‘Sunny Day’ expresses Runmrummer’s struggles growing up as an LGBTQ+ teenager, and not feeling like she could express herself. Like the entire EP, each track dwells on themes of alienation and feeling like a paper bag floating away into the abyss.

We chatted with this now bold genre-merging producer Runrummer below.

Describe your sound for us. What do you want people to feel when they hear your music?

Nostalgia, exhilaration, and a sense of longing.

Which 3 artists have influenced you the most growing up?

Gorillaz, David Bowie, Kate Bush.

How did you discover your particular sound?

I would say I still haven’t fully discovered it as it’s still constantly evolving. Every project I put out is a new sound and a new exploration. I like to keep things fluid and not be stuck in a box.

Tell us about one of the first struggles you faced (as a group or a solo artist) and how you overcame it?

Knowing how to navigate the industry and having the confidence to stand on my own two feet – to fully believe in myself and what I’m creating. I overcame this by spending every waking minute working on my craft outside of my day job. I took night classes in music production and online classes in music business. I attended conferences, seminars, and networking events. I worked with different producers,  and I wrote every day, also read constantly. Eventually, I had a collection of songs I felt ready to release, a strategy I felt in control of, and a network of people in the industry I trusted. Of course, my knowledge and experience are still constantly evolving and a lot of things are trial and error, but the work I did at the start has laid solid foundations for my project and developed the work ethic I still follow to this day.

What are the most important pieces of equipment to you?

Apple Mac and Logic for music production, Arturia Keylab 49 and Rode NT1-A with Aston Halo for recording.

Music for the individual or the masses – which do you want to create?

Both! It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

Do you have a favourite memory of your career so far?

Playing at FIMU in Belfort, France.

If you could work with, or perform alongside any artist living or passed, who would it be?

100% David Bowie.

What kind of message are you trying to send with your music?

Relatability.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

I’m working on a debut album for 2022 and have a headline show in London on 11th December.
