After the recent release of his collaboration with HAELIUM (Read our interview with HAELIUM and Kasztan here), eclectic French producer Kasztan is back, but this time with a solo release titled ‘Working Together’. The person behind the name is label founder–Stemina Recordings– Pierre-Marie, an individual who has dabbled in a variety of musical arenas to refine his craft. Intentionally or otherwise, the result is the same: the record makes skilful use of distorted tones and Future Garage-influenced percussion patterns.

The drums are the track’s central feature. Between swung rhythms, a tonal kick continues to thump its way through the first verse, biding its time until the chorus drops. Once it does, the kick is exchanged for a sustained bass, taking over the track’s sub-content. The switch is clever; a brief absence of the lower frequencies, i.e. a sample cut, ensures that an awkward change-up is avoided. I guess you could say that space and sound ‘work together’ to create a harmonious transition between fast-attacking transients and languid sustained tones.
